2012 January – Three Weeks in January

As a kick-off to Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in February, this January the Mayor’s Office is involved in a joint effort to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault issues in Los Angeles.

This effort, entitled “Three Weeks in January”, presents artwork by Suzanne Lacy, in collaboration with various organizations and entities in LA focused on issues of violence against women.

Rape Map

The project will recreate key aspects of “Three Weeks In May” (1977) an art exhibit exposing the true incidence of rape in Los Angeles, depicting every incidence on a map of the City. Its focus is on where LA is now, thirty years into the anti-rape movement.

This will be on display outside the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Police Administration Building (located at 100 West 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012) throughout the month of January 2012.  The work incorporates LAPD domestic violence and rape statistics and will be updated daily over the course of three weeks.

This project is part of the broader “Pacific Standard Time” exhibition that will be on display in over 60 museums across Southern California.
