LAPD – DNA

DNA Sexual Assault Evidence Kits

Since 2008 the City of Los Angeles has been working to eliminate a DNA backlog of over 6,000 untested rape kits, and now has the capacity to test DNA evidence from new crimes more rapidly than ever before.  Both the LAPD and Mayor are committed to this project, so justice can be served fro both survivors and their offenders.

LAPD – Sexual Assault Evidence Kits Progress Report September 2011

The Los Angeles Police Department Sexual Assault Evidence Kits (SAEK) Progress Report provides significant information about the status of the SAEK backlog elimination project.  The Serology/DNA unit is also responsible for processing and conducting analysis for biological evidence unrelated to sexual assaults, as well as additional evidence related to sexual assaults.  This report is a reflection of the productivity associated with SAEKs.

The September Progress Report shows a total of 405 Remaining Untested kits.  Of the 405 Remaining Untested kits, 136 are currently in progress at a contract laboratory.  The number of kits where testing has not yet been completed inhouse is 269 (41 have not yet been requested or assigned; the remainder are in progress).  None of the remaining untested kits are from the Historical Backlog, which is now zero.  There were an additional 110 new SAEKs collected in September.

Any new request for analysis of a sexual assault evidence kit is immediately put into the process of assignment to a SID criminalist for analysis (in-house or outsourced).  There is no backlog of unassigned requests for analysis of SAEKs as SID.

The report shows a total of 168 Pending Technical Reviews.  All data from the analysis of SAEKs by contract labs is put into the technical review process immediately upon return of the data.
